10 Facts and Statistics About Breast Cancer That we Learned from Know Your Lemons®
When we decided to partner up with Know Your Lemons® for the Limited Edition Breast Self Pack, we were most excited about their focus on education, expanding conversations, and taking action early.
It’s basically what we live for at IDA (when it comes to footwear), so you know we immediately downloaded their app and took all the quizzes on their site.
Here’s what we learned…
🍋 There are actually 12 symptoms of breast cancer to be aware of… beyond just “a lump”.
🎉 Stage 1 breast cancer has a 5-year survival rate of 99%... if found early, that’s huge!
🌏 But that number drops significantly in the majority of low- and middle-income countries. For example, the survival rate is only 66% in India and 40% in South Africa. More info.
👪 Of people diagnosed only 15% have a family history
🥜 Breasts are naturally lumpy and it’s the hard and immovable lumps we should be aware of.
💪🏾 A self breast exam should really examine all areas from armpits, to collarbone, to breast and rib cage.
🩻 Mammograms (x-ray for the breast) are most effective on women over age 40 when the breast becomes fattier. Under 40, your breasts are more of a dense tissue that can be hard for a mammogram to see through, so an ultrasound is more commonly recommended. But check out the Young Breast Cancer Project to learn more about how to advocate for additional screening under 40!
🩸It is common for breasts to be lumpy! That lumpiness often increases as you approach your period, so it is best to do your self exam at the end of your period when things are back to “normal”. Read more.
🌫️ Dense breasts make it harder to spot cancer in a mammogram but how do you know if you have dense breasts? Your mammography report will tell you where your breasts fall on the density spectrum!
♂️ 1% of breast cancer patients are male.
